Spring has sprung. In Arizona that means great weather and thus a great time to enjoy the outdoors again. Taking walks in the afternoon or evening, walking the dog, or going for a bike ride. Sounds great, right? We agree! Here’s a link for some Arizona Bicycle and Pedestrian Maps from ADOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program. But before you head out, we’d like to give you of a few guidelines to help keep everyone safe.

When going for a walk, use crosswalks when provided or cross at an intersection. This may sound obvious but look before you step into a roadway. Make eye contact with the drivers of approaching vehicles whenever possible. It’s usually easier for you to see an approaching vehicle than it is for the driver of the vehicle to see you. This is especially true at night, in low-light conditions such as dusk. Try to cross at well-lit locations.

As either a walker or bike rider, be aware and expect the unexpected. Don’t allow yourself to be so distracted that you’re not paying attention to your surroundings (put down the phone).

Bicyclists must obey the same traffic laws as drivers of vehicles, period. Ride in the same direction as traffic and remember to signal your moves to drivers. Enter streets and intersections cautiously. When riding at night be visible. Arizona law requires a white head lamp visible from 500 feet, and a rear reflector visible from 50-300 feet. And finally, always wear a helmet, it’s the safe way to ride.

Although some of these guidelines seem redundant, they bear repeating. As we enter the nicer weather months we want everyone to enjoy the outdoors in as safe a manner as possible.
